Warner! This guy is my favorite odd duck. Warner Lew is a fisheries manager, smoking and canning entrepreneur, and self-described herring evangelist. I pitched him in my successful application to NPR's NextGen Radio fellowship.
For this non-narrated piece, I pre-interviewed Warner and then taped with him for several hours on site. Along with my editor/mentor, I had him take me to his favorite childhood park, walk us through his elaborate freezer of fish, show us where he canned and prepped things for shipment, and cook us breakfast.
I cut four hours of tape down to just under 4 minutes, stringing together a story from everything Warner shared. After my rough cut, I worked with our long-suffering audio engineer to perfect the pacing. I also wrote the piece up separately for the web, here.
