KUOW has a program called #NewsPoets, in which Puget Sound poets respond to something they hear on the station. Local poet Imani Sims responded to a segment I'd done with Ijeoma Oluo, which was written up here by Knight Fellow Jennifer Dargan Brown.
Imani used the imagery of Black Panther to discuss life as a black woman in Seattle, so I contacted her about doing a followup segment. Podcast host and author Carvell Wallace was in town, and he'd been in a previous segment I'd done on Black Panther.
I pitched the conversation with a guest host because I wanted a more honest exchange than I felt our primary host could offer. I pre-interviewed both Carvell and Imani, and worked with Carvell to prep him for the interview.
After I engineered the interview, I cut it to present a more elegant narrative arc while preserving some of the serendipity that emerged (like #thatlaugh that starts at 8:11). Mixed down, built it out for the KUOW website.
