I grew up getting told I “wasn’t black enough,” whatever that means. Because of that, I wasn’t really in the habit of acknowledging other black folks on the street; I wasn’t sure of belonging. Leila Day of The Stoop was looking for African producers and reporters to hit the streets, do “the nod,” and see what happened.
Through our conversations about my upbringing, my family, and how people see me now, she asked me to produce a longer audio essay. It’s goofy and vulnerable and my older sister compares me to a herd animal (unspeakably rude). Hope you’ll listen. You can hear the full episode at Radiotopia’s Showcase, here.
